We install many types of hardwood flooring and ceramic tile and the result is always spectacular. When we are finished with the groutwork, our customers choose from the many different types of baseboard and 1/4 round there is to offer. Always painted or stained first as this leaves the cleanest of lines.
Radiant heat floors:

Have you ever experienced getting up on a Winters morning to the feel of a ceramic floor underneath your feet? Was it heated or unheated? I have lived with both and the difference is simply comfort. Is it absolutely necessary...probably not- but it makes life so much more pleasurable.
The heat comes from underneath the tile where a coiled mat is laid down between a layer of mortar- this protects both the underlayment and tile. Also, it enables the heat to transfer more evenly. The coiled mat has a sensor that allows the thermostat to "feel" the temperature of the tile. The thermostat is generally installed beside the light switch on the wall.
Interestingly, this method of "radiant heat" comes from the Romans where they would build what we would describe a crawl space under the floor. From there they would light a fire and discovered a very comfortable floor and even heating. But dont try this at home - remember, their floors were very thick.
Keep in mind that radiant heat, whether in your bathroom or throughout your home saves hundreds of dollars a year in heating bills. This is mainly because the heat is evenly distributed from the floor and moves upward, the whole mass transferring to walls and anything in the way.
